Most third party logistics will offer basic services such as warehousing, inventory management and freight services. These three areas are the core of the logistics business and offered by almost everyone in the business. Most often, clients need more than storage and inventory management... That's where value added services come into play. Understanding your potential 3PL Partner's value added service abilities can make all the difference. As you navigate the market and look into capabilities, here are four value added services most requested by our clients and may be critical to your Southern California warehouse solution: kitting, re-work, ticketing and packaging.
Kitting
Kitting is a service in which the inventory is assembled into “kits.” Kits can also have extra generic packaging added to create the look or effect desired by the client. This service creates a “new” product via bundling with existing inventory. Clients with products in retail spaces find kitting critical for seasonal promotions or depleting certain SKU's in their inventory.
Example: A client sends the warehouse 2 SKU’s, a wallet and a purse. The warehouse would package both items together to be sold as a set creating one new SKU.
Re-Work
Rework services offer clients an affordable way to prepare product for sale, while avoiding the time and expense of returning it to the original manufacturer. Having your product in a facility that has Re-work services will help keep inventory moving.
Example: Repurposing inventory after it’s been returned.
Ticketing
All product must have some sort of ticketing for tracking and selling purposes. The type of ticket depends on where it will be sold; department store, e-commerce, wholesale retailers, etc.. It’s important to team up with a 3PL provider that has experience and the ability to produce the tickets required for your products.
Example: Barcode stickers and/or hang tags.
Packaging
Consumer buyer habits are visually driven, which is why presentation and packaging can be critical. Creating the best packaging for your product should be something you and your 3PL provider can agree on.
Example: Creating an eye-catching kit such as an end cap or store display.
